The bay's western shores hold the metropolis of Rio de Janeiro - the River of January, considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world because it has beautiful landscapes, soft white sandy beaches, the famous Sugar Loaf Mountain at 1,296 feet (395 m), Corcovado Peak at 2,310 feet (704 m), and the hills of Tijuca at 3,350 feet (1021 m). At the apex of Corcovado stands the iconic 38m statue and symbol of the city, the Christ the Redeemer, and we cannot forget Rio de Janeiro weather which is the best with warm summers and mild winter.

According to some historians the city of Rio de Janeiro was first discover by the Portuguese explorers Gaspar de Lemos and Gonçalo Coelho on January 1, 1502, they originally named “Ria de Janeiro” that in Portuguese culture means "January Sound”, after few years the name was changed to Rio de Janeiro.

The Harbor of Rio Janeiro always had a rich and diversified ecosystem, but because of the increasing population it has suffered damage and has been polluted. But the beauty of the bay is still maintained.
